About Therapy

Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or long term to help them bring about effective change and/or enhance their wellbeing.

Talking therapies can help with many difficult life problems - from coping with traumatic experiences and events, to dealing with depression and anxiety, or managing harmful emotions and behaviours.

Therapy helps you to gain a greater awareness of those aspects of yourself that you are currently less aware of, or even unaware of, and in doing so enables you to make clearer choices for yourself and for your life.

My role as your therapist has three main functions:

  • I will try my best to understand what it is like for you to be you. Of course I can never truly understand, but through my very act of trying you will be supported to express and explore your own experience of being you and in doing so you will gain a greater understanding of yourself.

  • I will sometimes offer you interpretations based upon my training and experience and I will sometimes offer you feedback based upon my observations. The aim of my suggestions will always be to help you to look at things in different ways.

  • I will notice when you might be making unexamined assumptions about your situation and I may challenge those assumptions, not because they are “wrong” but because you might benefit from the process of re-evaluating them.

I practise an integrative model of counselling and psychotherapy which is informed by humanistic and person-centred approaches, psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theories, and transpersonal psychology. Due to its flexibility the integrative approach is highly adaptable and well suited to most people.
